October Athletes of the Month
Sam Levi: senior, Football; Rebecca Acevedo: sophomore, Volleyball; Cameron Cabrera: junior, Swimming. These three athletes have been exceptional both in their respective sports as well as outside the competition amongst their teammates. They have led their teams to numerous victories and paved the way for future success in Westminster Athletics.
Although there were many outstanding performances by numerous varsity football players, senior captain, Sam Levi, stood above the rest. Over the last four years, Sam’s work ethic, leadership and dedication to the football program catapulted him into a fast, quick and strong defensive lineman tipping the scales at 205lbs. His never-quit attitude allowed him the opportunity to play with a high level of energy and achieve much success. A memorable performance was a fourth quarter four-sack game against Palmer Trinity, which in turn, propelled the Warriors to victory. Like many of our senior athletes, Sam’s shoes will be hard to fill.
Perhaps the most exciting thing about sophomore, Rebecca Acevedo, is the fact that Westminster will be blessed with this outstanding athlete for two more years. Throughout the season, Rebecca was called upon to perform numerous tasks, including playing multiple positions in a single match. Without hesitation, she answered the call with an attitude and drive coaches dream about. She is a natural-born leader whether she is running the show as setter or contributing offensively as a hitter. Although she led the team in service aces, averaged over 30 assists per match, and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Warriors’ Invitational, the most impressive attribute is her passion and willingness to give everything she has for her team.
After our varsity boys’ swim team wins, the first name you read in The Miami Herald is Cameron Cabrera, and rightfully so. Cameron’s non-stop training in and out of season has enabled him to achieve a large amount of success during both individual races and team competition. He has remained undefeated in all dual meets and claimed the District Title in the 200 Free. As if that was not impressive enough, he led the Warriors to an 11th place Regional finish, scoring in individual and relay events. He was one of two Westminster swimmers who advanced to the State Tournament! Once again, Cameron returned a winner, finishing 16th out of over 100, and for the first time in 20 years, our boys’ team ended within the top half of over 80 teams!
