The "Wings Over Homestead" 2009 Air Show has a connection at Westminster! Jake Binger, one of our 5th grade students, is the son of Brigadier General William "Blaze" Binger, the commander of Homestead Air Reserve Base and the host of
the air show. It's the first air show at the Homestead base since Hurricane Andrew. Plan to check out this amazing weekend event!

Westminster Students Join in Prayer
Westminster students on each campus joined the national "See You at the Pole" (SYATP) day of prayer on September 17. Started in Texas in the early 90's, SYATP is an annual event that draws millions of students worldwide with the common purpose of prayer.

Homecoming 2009
Homecoming planning begins months in advance to prepare the current student body for all of the fun activities, as well as to prepare the campus for hundreds of past alumni returning to their Warrior stomping grounds. Homecoming Week activities begin on Mon., Nov. 2, and culminates with the Homecoming Game, and Dinner & Dance on Sat., Nov. 7.

HS Students Share their Knowledge with the Fourth Grade
Mrs. Adams' HS World History students delivered first-person narratives about the life of a hunter/gatherer from a Florida Indian tribe with Ms. Santacoloma and Ms. Koger's fourth grade classes. The fourth grade is in the midst of their "Florida" unit.

HS Celebrates Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon week is designed to raise student awareness concerning the dangers of drugs and alcohol. This year, Red Ribbon Week is October 17-23, and Westminster is excited to bring guest speaker Mrs. Witty to our school. Mrs. Witty will share the story of her daughter, Helen Witty, and how she was tragically killed at the age of 16 by an 18 year old drunk driver. The perils and temptations of alcohol are certainly evident throughout our community, and Westminster is thankful to Mrs. Witty and her willingness to share her daughter's story, in an effort to educate our students.

Sixth Grade Bible Class Takes on Bullying
Experts indicate that taunting, teasing, and playground fights are the first steps toward violence. The sixth grade Bible classes are taking a proactive approach to resolving these real life issues by acknowledging these first steps and by putting a stop to them. Students learn coping strategies and resolutions to such behaviors through role playing verbal harassment, gossiping, exclusion, and unwanted physical contact.

Mrs. Abbey's first grade class found a "sweet" way to practice their math and measuring skills. All of the students brought a bag of Twizzlers to school, and they estimated how many sticks it would take to reach Principal Thompson's office.

Congratulations to Kindergarten student, Calvin Frette, who is a budding BMX racing star. On Sept. 19 & 20, he participated in a BMX competition in St. Cloud, FL, where he took the top spot in three of the races.

The Elementary School students have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming Hispanic Heritage Festival on Fri., Oct. 30. They have been learning all about Hispanic countries and their different cultures. They have produced a variety of beautiful works to show off their new knowledge of Hispanic Heritage.

The yarn is rolling out of the Elementary Art Classes as students learn to make "God's eyes." After a history lesson from Mrs. Heetderks about how Indians created these works of art, students have been busy creating their own designs.

HS Theatre Department Presents "Teach Me How to Cry"
The High School Theatre Department is presenting Patricia Joudry's "Teach Me How to Cry" on Thurs. and Fri., Oct. 22 and Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Guarch Family Auditorium. This sensitive, teen drama follows the relationship of two socially awkward High School students whose innocence is misinterpreted, and who are judged by the failings of their parents.

News from Girls' Volleyball by Coach Julie Doan
Both JV and Varsity Volleyball won tournaments last weekend (9/25-26).
Varsity participated in the Ransom Everglades Tournament and defeated the following teams to bring home the gold: Archbishop Carroll, Braddock HS, University School, Palmetto HS, and Chaminde-Madonna. Deanna Etzold was selected to the "All-Tournament" Team and Meghan Kenney received Tournament MVP.
