Westminster Prepares to Celebrate 50th Anniversary (1961-2011)
It is an exciting time at WCS! The school is about to mark a very important milestone - its 50th Anniversary - and we want everyone to be part of this important celebration. Since 1961, thousands of students and their families have been part of the Westminster community and we are working to bring as many of these folks together for a series of spectacular events to celebrate the blessings God has provided over the last 50 years.

Westminster would like to offer a transportation service for families who live in the areas of Coral Gables, South Miami, North Pinecrest, Homestead and Key Largo for the 2010-2011 school year. The service would provide one-way service in the morning to school, on a daily basis, from centralized drop-off and pick-up locations in each of the neighborhoods mentioned.

MAOFullMembers2-22-10 WCS Students Inducted Into National Math Honor Society
Twenty-three HS students were inducted into Mu Alpha Theta, the national math honor society. To be eligible for membership, a student must have completed four semesters of college preparatory mathematics and be enrolled in a fifth semester. In addition, a student must maintain an A average in these courses.

AP Book Club AP English Book Club Challenges Students
Every year in the spring the AP English 11 classes are part of Book Club - their third book-related project of the year. The students are divided into groups of five, and each group reads a different book. Every week for five weeks the students take turns being the facilitator, who is responsible for preparing a quiz for the group and leading the in-depth discussions.

Board Game Presentation 0910 History Comes to Life by Jeff Heck, Sixth Grade History Teacher
The sixth grade history class is bubbling with excitement. After reading a historical fiction novel, the students creatively designed board games that showcased some of the historical information they learned and demonstrated their understanding of literary components such as setting, character, plot, and the like.

The WCS Junior Thespian Troupe competed for the first time in the International Thespian Society's Junior Thespian Florida State Festival on Feb. 12 and 13. Representing Westminster at the event were eighth grade students: Michael Martinez, Anabella Mazariegos, C.J. Heck, and Anthony Rivera.

MS Basketball MS Boys' Basketball Triumph by MS Reporters Gaby Zelhof (6th) and Isabella Hernandez (8th)
On January 9, 2010, the Warrior's Boys' Basketball Team won first place in the MCDS tournament, also known as Miami Country Day Tournament! Winning the tournament gave WCS a lead among other schools. Eighth grade and WCS middle school "A" team player, Matthew Zelhof, commented, "It was awesome to win the tournament and we knew that we deserved it!"

DSC 0002 MS Shows their Love for Haiti!
MS students showed their love for the people of Haiti during their "Have a Heart for Haiti" drive. Sponsored by the Middle School Student Council and the Junior National Honor Society, students were encouraged to forgo the usual flowers and candy at Valentine's, and instead donate items needed in Haiti. Students who participated received a heart to place on their locker that says, "I have a heart for Haiti." The drive achieved about 50% participation.

IMG 0001 ES Students Study Abstract Art at Fairchild Tropical Gardens
The first through fifth grade students were able to enjoy the abstract sculpture of Yayoi Kusama and Mark Di Suvero during a recent field trip to Fairchild Tropical Gardens. After studying the two-dimensional abstract art of Mondrian, Pollack, and Kandinsky in our regular classroom sessions, it was fun to be about to climb and walk around real sculptures!

What would we do without all the great Mommies who make parties like this such wonderful fun? The students loved playing Bingo and participating in outdoor games. The fruit fondue was healthy as well as yummy. We especially liked sharing our valentines, hearts, roses and affection with our classmates and Moms & Dads!

Congratulations to the WCS orchestra students in fifth through twelfth grade who earned Superior and Excellent ratings at the Florida Orchestra Association (FOA) Music Performance District Solo/Ensemble Assessments on February 6. In total, Westminster student received an amazing 49 Superior, and three Excellent ratings.

WCS Orchestras and Choirs Earn Superiors!
Congratulations are in order to Westminster's Orchestras and Choirs! All four orchestras, two HS and two MS, received Superior ratings at the Florida Orchestra Association Musical Performance Assessments. Both HS orchestras will now go to State. All four choirs evaluated at the Florida Vocal Association Music Performance Assessments were rated Superior and will now move on to State (HS) and/or Orlando (MS) competitions later this spring.
