Congratulations to WCS sixth grade student Merrett Fay and his dad, WCS alum and Foundation Board Member, Michael Fay who competed and placed in two recent Wakeboard Competitions. This summer in Oklahoma City they competed in the WWA National Wakeboard Championship where Mike placed third in the Veteran Men division, and Merrett placed sixth in Beginner Boys.

Sixth Grade Science is a "Hoot"
Sixth grade science students have already completed their first novel of the school year, "Hoot," by Carl Hiassen. As part of their studies, students described personal experiences through journaling topics, similar to the experiences of the main character in the novel. This is the first of four novels they will complete this year.

Catch of the Day by WCS 8th Grade Student Natalia Alvarez
Exotic fish in local fresh water canals? That is exactly what three eighth grade boys caught a few weeks ago in their neighborhood canal. Austin Sanders, Matthew Sanchez and Brian Kiley caught these beautiful, exotic, fresh water fish called Maya Cichlid. Interestingly, they have become very popular tank fish. Growing up to 18 inches, their color ranges from a bright orange to a spotty white, and they have a bump on the front of their heads.

On Friday, August 28, the Fifth Grade spent the last 45 minutes of the day getting to know each other. With 18 new students in the class, spending a little time playing games was a great way to bond. ES Students Fill A Race Car with School Supplies for CHARLEE House
WCS Elementary students and Drew Brannon, a Junior at WCS as well as a professional race car driver, collected school supplies for CHARLEE Homes for Children, a non-profit agency that cares for abused and neglected children in Miami-Dade County.

Learning and the Brain by Lourdes Caudales, Horizons Director
Tangrams, morse code, going on a scavenger hunt, and computers. What do these have to do with learning and the brain? If you walk into one of our GRASP classrooms you will see children using the morse code to spell their vocabulary words. The technique known as buzzer is used by the teachers to strengthen auditory association skills and improve visual sequential memory. By strengthening these areas the students are able to attend to visual and auditory stimuli needed for success in all academic subjects.
