Westminster Christian School opened its doors in 1961 with a noble goal in mind: to provide an excellent Christian education to the children of Christian families.  Thanks to the vision and dedication of Mr. Jules Vroon, and the leadership of many faithful men and women over the years, Westminster Christian School has become the standard for Christian education in South Florida.

Our History & Important Milestones

Westminster Christian School opened its doors on September 6, 1961, on the grounds of Shenandoah Presbyterian Church. Beginning the year with only 12 students, enrollment climbed to 40 students after the first few months. Three teachers served students in grades 1-8, under the leadership of Mr. Jacob Heerema, the first school principal. Just two years later, Westminster moved to its new and present location with an increased enrollment of 169 students, and 14 full-time and five part-time teachers. Mr. Daniel DeLange succeeded Mr. Heerema as principal, and under his able and persevering leadership, Westminster continued to move forward. By 1966, Westminster graduated its first class of students.

Interim Head of School

Mr. David Medder

Title: Interim Head of School
Department/Office: Head of School

Education: Master's Degree and Bachelor's Degree from Eastern Illinois University

I love my job! Since I was in 6th grade, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. God blessed me and I taught public school for 11 years in my home area of Southern Illinois. But, God had a bigger plan. In 2001, after my wife and I had been praying for God to enlarge our territory and to bless us, we were hired by WCS and moved to Miami. I brought my three children and wife (who was my high school sweetheart) from the countryside outside a town of 900 of mostly farmers to the wonderful, multicultural city of Miami. I taught History, Government and Economics for a couple of years and then was hired as the HS assistant principal before becoming the principal in 2006. Today I serve as the acting superintendent. What an incredible journey we are traveling and what a blessing WCS has been to my children--Katie '07, who married her high school sweetheart Tim Moon 07, Wilson '11, who married and moved back to Illinois and now is in Ohio, and Eli '15 who is attending the United States Naval Academy, where he is also playing soccer. Westminster is a great community and I am blessed to be part of it.

Alumni

Westminster boasts approximately 3,000 alumni. WCS alumni represent more than 30 percent of the membership on the WCS Board of Directors, and 10 percent of WCS faculty and staff. Legacy students represented more than 10 percent of WCS enrollment in the past year. These students are the children of Westminster graduates, or former students, who understand and value the positive effect their WCS education had on their lives, and want to share it with their children. Visit our Alumni page.

Fine Arts

The Fine Art curriculum is enjoyed by students from preschool through 12th grade. Beginning in fourth grade, students have the choice of participating in choir, band or orchestra. The curriculum broadens as students begin their high school careers. Visual Arts offers courses at the honors and AP level, including photojournalism, printmaking, sculpture, and drawing/painting. Musicians can choose from concert and chamber orchestra, concert band, jazz ensemble, or drum line. The choir offers both all-female choral groups and mixed ensembles. Drama offers opportunities both on the stage and behind the scenes, with courses such as drama, stage craft and debate.
