Westminster Guidance Counselors Attend Convention on Mental Health, the Pandemic and More
Westminster counselors, Yeni Dumas (middle school) and Scarlett Saldana (high school), joined other school counselors from across the state at the 2021 Florida School Counselors Association Convention in Tampa, FL. Dumas and Saldana attended sessions on multi-tiered mental health support for students, how to help the pandemic generation thrive now and later, how to support social and emotional learning (SEL) skills, how to teach youth to embrace imperfections and more!
"I learned about SEL and core competencies as well as how to use skill-building activities to help students reach their full potential," said Yeni Dumas, Westminster's middle school counselor.
"SEL skills are integral to the education and human development of our students," she added. "It involves the way they process, acquire and apply the social skills and attitudes needed to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, achieve personal goals, feel and show empathy for others, and establish and maintain healthy relationships. As Westminster counselors, we understand that our role is to help students learn the social skills necessary to become caring, hardworking, resilient, young people."
