National Honor Society

Sponsor: Dr. Lynell Martinez

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
Membership is an opportunity to students to learn leadership skills and to serve their community through the organization of and participation in service projects in their community.

Eligibility:
Juniors and seniors who have attended Westminster Christian High School for two semesters and have maintained a cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.5 or above are eligible to be considered for membership. Students previously inducted at another high school will be accepted as members at Westminster by obtaining a letter from the chapter adviser of their previous school.

Selection:
At the beginning of each school year, a letter will be sent to students with a qualifying GPA notifying them of their eligibility and inviting them to fill out a Student Information Form. Information provided by the student as well as teacher evaluations is used by the 5-member Faculty Council to select the students that best exemplify the values of the National Honor Society. Students will be informed in writing of their selection for membership and invited to attend the induction ceremony in November.

Obligations of membership:
Members of the National Honor Society are expected to maintain a minimum of a 3.25 cumulative GPA (unweighted) and a good discipline record. In addition, members are expected to attend monthly meetings and to participate in a minimum of 10 hours of NHS sponsored service projects each year. This year service projects will include peer tutoring, blood drives, and a carnival for underprivileged children. Failure to fulfill these obligations will be place on probation for a semester, at which time the faculty council will determine whether the student should be reinstated as a member in good standing or removed from membership. Blatant disregard for school rules will constitute immediate dismissal from the organization without a probationary period.
