Mu Alpha Theta

The WCS Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta is geared toward students who demonstrate high mathematical aptitude and deep interest in mathematical problem solving. The club provides a venue where the intellectual curiosity of mathematically talented students can be expanded and explored through group and individual math competitions.
Step 1: Qualifications
Qualifying students:
•    Are nominated by their current math teachers, and have earned a 90% or higher for the 1st 9 week progress report of this current school year 
•    Have completed Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and are currently enrolled in a math Honors/AP course above Algebra 2 
•    Currently have a minimum unweighted Math GPA of 3.5 and,
•    Have a minimum GPA of 3.30 in all other subjects.

Step 2: Application for Associate Membership
If a student meets those criteria, he/she will be invited via email to apply for Associate Membership. Students accepted into Mu Alpha Theta in their first year attain Associate Membership which requires that the student:
1)    Participate in 3 or more Mu Alpha Theta competitions,
2)    Maintain the club GPA standards, and
3)    Are cleared of all general administrative issues regarding character, course attendance/tardies, and classroom behavior.

Step 3: Full Membership
All of the above mentioned objectives must be fulfilled during the student’s Associate Membership year before induction as Full Members of Mu Alpha Theta.  Associate Members who fulfill these objectives will be inducted into full membership of Mu Alpha Theta and will be recognized the following school year at the WCS Annual Honors Societies Induction Ceremony.

Mu Alpha Theta membership requirements for students entering in their senior year: 
 
Seniors who are currently enrolled in AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, or AP Statistics who have not previously applied to Mu Alpha Theta and are interested in membership must complete the following before the end of April 2022.  
  • Complete 3 or more competitions during 2021-2022. 
  • Maintain a 90% or higher Math GPA throughout their senior year, (in addition to 3.00 or higher in all other subjects)
  • Obtain 20 hours of community service, via math tutoring, or participation in math events on campus or elsewhere in the community, i.e., robotics, engineering or STEM. 
After completion of those criteria, the student will receive their certificate of membership and graduation cords.
