Westminster Teacher Shares Personal Experience with Holocaust Survivor with Students
As an undergraduate at the University of Miami, Westminster high school English teacher Hannah North '09 had the privilege to be part of a program where she met once a week for a year with a Holocaust survivor. The overarching goal of the program was to document their stories and to help preserve their experiences for future generations.
Ms. North was interviewed for the film, and the film also highlighted a visit from a Holocaust survivor to her class at Westminster. From this was born the opportunity for the director of the program to produce a documentary showcasing the experiences of the students with their Holocaust survivors. “This is such an important story, and I am honored to have been a part of it,” said Ms. North. “One of my favorite things about being an English teacher is sharing with students the importance of reading and preserving people's stories. Being able to connect them with a survivor of the Holocaust is a memory that I know they will treasure for the rest of their lives and I hope that they bear witness to the courage and resilience of those who experienced the atrocities during the Holocaust."
The final film, “My Survivor” received accolades at the Jewish Film Festival and aired nationally on PBS through 2020. In addition to producing the film, project organizers have created a curriculum resource guide to support teachers as they seek to teach about the Holocaust in their classrooms.
