High School Students Release Literary Magazine with "In the Eye of the Storm" Theme

Westminster's highly-anticipated literary magazine, "Roots," is here! From the theme to the photography to the artwork and proses, this is a publication that you won't want to miss.
This year's theme, "In the Eye of the Storm," was chosen by Westminster's general student body and was inspired by a Ryan Stevenson song that goes by the same name. Both students and faculty participated in submitting works of art, photography, proses and poetry that related to the selected theme.

"...'In the Eye of the Storm' is unique because I feel as though it can be interpreted on a personal level however an individual chooses," said Gianna Birkeland '21, assistant editor for the magazine. "Whether literal or figurative, the eye of the storm serves to represent challenges the natural world presents and the way in which people may adapt and overcome."

As you read through the publication, it is evident that students and faculty alike drew on personal experiences for their submissions. The first work of art featured in the magazine is that of Nina Cuesta '21. Her drawing, titled "The Desolate Brute," is accompanied by a short description that reads as follows:

"This piece was inspired by Deuteronomy 31:6. 'Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you."

While the magazine's literary staff thought the theme may have been a little difficult this year, Austin Jones '22, editor-in-chief for the magazine, agrees that Westminster's creative minds hit it out of the park.

"I'm overjoyed to see how many different ways people interpreted this year's theme of 'In the Eye of the Storm,'" said Jones. "It was a hard one, as it required more abstract thinking, and so I congratulate everyone in being so imaginative."

A special thank to all who participated and to the magazine's Editor-in-Chief Austin Jones '22, Writing Editor Gianna Birkeland '21, Art Editor Ana Vega '21 and faculty sponsor, Mrs. Angela Castano.
