Juniors Engage in Educational Community Service Events
The class of 2023 engaged in a series of community service events across South Florida that also educated students on the impact of plastic pollution, the importance of native plants in Florida, the role of mangroves in Florida's ecosystem and current resources used to empower the homeless.
The community service events took place at the Deering Estate, Fairchild Botanic Gardens, Debris Free Oceans at Crandon Park and Chapman Partnership.
At both Deering Estate and Fairchild, the students engaged in beautification projects which included the removal of invasive plant species. While at Crandon park, they collected over 70 pounds of trash over a two-day period. This information was then uploaded to the NOAA debris tracker which allows citizen scientists to collect data on plastic pollution in their community for environmental conservation. Finally, students joined Chapman Partnerships to sort donations, prepare lunch, power-wash the dental vehicle and more.
Brenda Alba, high school English, leadership skills and service learning teacher, organized these special community service events.
"As Christians, we are called to serve; however, many students have been unable to volunteer with organizations due to Covid-19. I wanted to provide students with the opportunity to connect and engage in meaningful service with local community organizations while learning about issues that face South Florida. Students were also able to select which community service opportunity they were interested in and obtain information about further volunteer opportunities with that organization," said Alba.
