Senior Alysssa Kreps Spearheads Relief Efforts for Haiti
Senior Alyssa Kreps recognized that the need in Haiti would only grow after being hit by Hurricane Matthew, and she knew that she could help. Her church, Old Cutler Presbyterian, supports El Shaddai, a ministry in Jeremie, Haiti, which cares for some 400 orphans in the area, and meets the needs of area churches. Alyssa spearheaded a drive to collect goods that would be packed into a bus the ministry had already purchased and was being shipped to Jeremie. So began the “Fill the Haiti Bus” campaign.
She organized a backpack drive in the high school and the elementary school supported the cause with a financial gift. She also reached out to the community, asking for clothing, shoes, bedding, backpacks and school supplies. CallFM, a local Christian radio station, also gave her the opportunity to go live on-air to ask for additional support. With the bus parked at Old Cutler Presbyterian, support from the Palmetto Bay community was amazing. People dropped off goods at the church and a group of volunteers sifted through the donations, labeled them and then packed them into the bus.
Thank you, Alyssa, for taking action in the face of this great need in Haiti.
