HS Cafecito Club Serves in DR Over Spring Break

Kayla Dumas '21
The Cafecito Club spent Spring Break bringing Jesus' love and their hearts of service to the children of the Dominican Republic. Read club founder Kayla Dumas' '21 first-hand account of this life-changing trip.

The Cafecito in the Dominican Republic Mission Trip will always be an unforgettable experience for me, and the orphans at Fundacion Red De Misericordia, in Santiago De Los Caballeros, stole my heart. Although the thought of what they suffered through in their past made my heart ache, the joy and love for Jesus these children had was more than just alleviating, it was restoring.
All the children wanted was a loving touch, someone to hold them, a shoulder to lean on. Thirsty for love, but abundant in joy, these children stole my heart, and my love for them was easily poured out for them to have and to keep. Teaching these children about Jesus through vacation Bible school was amazing. My favorite part about teaching was seeing the smiles on these children’s faces, and how they were not afraid to show they loved Jesus. From reciting John 3:16 to proclaiming that Jesus was their Savior, these children revealed to me how good God really is. Whether it was their smile, their silly sayings, telling me their favorite verse, playing outside, or teaching me new words in Spanish, these children showed me that love is more than a word, it’s an action. Even though these children longed for a loving touch, their eyes twinkled with the love of Jesus. Every moment I held one in my arms I felt Jesus in the warmth of their hugs. One little shining star in particular, Francesca, showed me something special. Knowing she had been through what a child should never endure, her special heart touched me beyond words can describe. Hope in Jesus is what I saw in this little girls beautiful hazel eyes. Her charismatic, feisty, hopeful, sweet, beautiful, and loving attitude touched me like nothing ever has. Although I miss holding her in my arms, having her look into my eyes while touching my cheek and telling me “Te amo Kayla, mucho,” giving her the love she desperately wanted, and having her hand in mine, I know Jesus has big plans for my sweet girl's life, and in the life of all the children at Fundación Red De Misericordia. God worked in big ways throughout this mission trip, and He not only changed lives, He touched hearts.
