WCS Hosts First Robotics Competition; ES Teams Earn Awards

Three WCS elementary teams - Teams 6855A, 6855B, and 6855C - participated in the VEX IQ Robotics Competition, hosted by Westminster Christian School on Sat., Oct. 13. This event brought together 23 teams from eight private and public schools from Miami-Dade and Broward counties to compete in numerous robotic matches. Additionally, schools were judged on engineering journals that detail the robot design process.
Team 6855C, led by Mrs. Mailyn Santiesteban, finished in third place, earned the STEM Research Project Award, and a bid to the VEX IQ State Competition in March 2019. This award is presented to the team that develops and delivers an effective research project presentation and demonstrates a significant depth of understanding of this year's theme, Mathematics. Team 6855C includes WCS students: Joey Hernandez-Solaun, Amarri Irvin, Santiago Ganley, Anthony Gonzalez, Jonah Santiesteban, Russell Briggs, RJ Linares, Daniel Fernandez and Andrew Godoy.

Teams 6855B and 6855C made it to the finals in the Alliance runs. Team 6855B also earned a State Bid for capturing the Design Award for producing an Engineering Notebook which provides clear and complete documentation of the team's robot design process.  Team 6855A, made up of primarly fourth graders with no prior competition experience, finished in a commendable 16th place overall. 

Team 6855B is coached by Mrs. Claudia Pastrana and includes WCS students: Gaby Gonzalez, Gabi Martin, Reva Eikenberg, Kaitlyn Walker, Ilysa Hilliard, Zoe DeVarona, Sara Espitia, Gigi Artiles, Lorena Haedo, Caroline Seagren

Team 6855A, also coached by Mrs. Pastrana, includes WCS students: John Bomnin, Christopher Jimenez, Castan Conley, Patrick Eikenberg, Jeshua Bastante, Enzo Scafuro, Lauren Chen, and Emma Belvedere.
