The Blessing

In 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world, a song was released by Elevation Worship, Cody Carnes, and Kari Jobe called The Blessing. In a matter of days, it went viral. Within weeks, the song had over a million views on YouTube (at the time this article was written, there were over 120 million views). As the world went into lockdown, people from all over the globe, trapped in their homes under quarantine, began recording their own versions of the song in different languages. From my perspective as a staff member at Elevation Church, it was amazing to see Christians worldwide hear and receive the message of assurance that God had delivered through our local church.

But The Blessing is not just a worship song—it is deeply rooted in Scripture, specifically Numbers 6. These words are part of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible), which form the foundation of both Judaism and Christianity. The message of this passage has always been intended as a reminder that true blessing comes from abiding in the Lord. Knowing God, walking with Him, and obeying His word lead to peace and fulfillment.

This year, we’ve been exploring what it means to be blessed, and this passage of Scripture encapsulates it perfectly. It reminds us of the foundational truth: If God is for you, who can be against you? (Romans 8:31).

The priestly blessing in Numbers 6 says, “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.”

These words are not just a wish—they are a declaration of God’s favor, protection, and peace over His people. They assure us that, in God’s presence, we find everything we need. As we continue to pursue what it means to be blessed, let us remember that true blessing comes when we walk in the light of God’s grace and trust in His peace
