Summary of the November 7 Fall Association Meeting

At the Fall Association Meeting, Westminster Board of Trustees Chair, Philip Floyd, and Head of School, Scott Jones, shared updates regarding Westminster’s strategic plan, steps the Board and school administration are taking to meet our goals, and our vision for the future. For the members of our community who were not able to attend, below is a summary of the information that was shared.

The Board's unwavering focus remains on ensuring the long-term sustainability of Westminster.

  • A significant decision was made to accept Florida state vouchers/scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year. This decision will be subject to annual reviews, with a steadfast commitment to monitoring legislative developments that do not align with our school’s policies or mission. If there is any threat to our mission, we will withdraw from accepting these funds.

  • Westminster is engaged in comprehensive site planning for future campus improvements. This extensive process involves collaboration with traffic engineers, architects, and a needs assessment. While no plans are set in stone currently, these endeavors are part of our long-term planning.

  • Our commitment to growth and long-term sustainability is demonstrated by a capital campaign aimed at raising $30 million for new buildings. Our fundraising priorities include enhancing athletic facilities, the Middle School campus, and fostering endowment growth. The Board has also chosen not to accept a $10 million pledge from a prominent attorney, opting instead for a broader community campaign.

  • In alignment with our commitment to attracting and retaining exceptional faculty, increases in tuition will be directed towards supporting competitive faculty salaries.

The Board is optimistic about the future of Westminster and is focused on maintaining the school’s unwavering focus on its mission. The Board invests considerable time and energy in spiritual development and ensuring that the school remains steadfast in its Christian identity. Westminster’s administration is grateful for the strong support of the Board and shares their positive outlook on the future of our school.

  • Recently, Westminster completed its re-accreditation visit with three agencies. The school received numerous commendations, and was noted for having no mandates, standards violations, or compliance issues. Some commendations include the successful establishment of The Nature Center, the vibrancy of the chapel program, and the intentional living out of our mission. Our preschool/early childhood education program garnered special recognition for its strength.

  • It was recommended that the Board of Trustees explore agile and self-perpetuating governance models. Safety improvements, especially regarding the front entrance of the high school, are encouraged to continue. It is recommended to explore how the use of Florida scholarship funds and a tuition increase can positively impact faculty compensation plans. The school is also urged to boldly pursue the capital campaign portion of the strategic plan for future campus improvements. These recommendations will be integrated into our school improvement plan.
Considerable progress has also been made on the recommendations from last year’s parent survey; however, there is still more work to be done. Steps have been taken to enforce the dress code more consistently, improve math instruction and curriculum including the addition of a new math staff member to provide leadership in this area, and enhance the lunch menu, stations, and functional serving areas. Finally, improved and new athletic facilities are being addressed through an upcoming capital campaign.

Additional upcoming capital improvements include a new middle school building. Renovations to the former auditorium are currently underway and will provide new spaces for orchestra, choir, dance, and a Warrior Wear Shop.

In conclusion, Westminster’s board and administration share a commitment to continuous school improvement. Westminster is strong and is recognized as one of the leading schools in the state, as evidenced by unprecedented demand and the affirmation from three accrediting agencies. We are committed to achieving our mission with excellence.
